The best ways to enjoy the midnight sun

If you’re lucky enough to be in Iceland when the midnight sun appears, you’re in for a treat, if you bought a sleep mask!

When can I see the midnight sun in Iceland?

Summer solstice is on June 21st and around that time the midnight sun is up almost 24/7, but it’s still visible from the end of May until July. You might not be as aware of it on cloudy days, but it´ll still be bright outside until late.

So, what are the best ways to enjoy the midnight sun in Iceland?

There are a million different ways of enjoying the midnight sun, but of course, we think some are better than others. Here are our suggestions:

  • Go and see some of the natural wonders in the evening if the weather is good. It adds a lot of drama and eeriness, but the best part is that it’s less crowded!
  • Go somewhere a bit remote where there are birch trees, moss etc. Go where it’s very, very quiet. Walk into nature, find a nice spot with no wind, sit down and listen to the birds chatting. The smell, the sounds and the beautiful, dreamy and mystical light coming from the midnight sun will totally relax you and make you feel like you’re in another world.
  • Have a drink downtown. It’s strange to be out at midnight, partying, when it’s still bright outside. The atmosphere is somehow a lot different!

The sleep mask issue

But we were very serious when we mentioned the sleep mask. Lots of people have a real issue with sleeping when the midnight sun is up. It tends to make its way through even the best curtains and make your life miserable when you’re trying to fall asleep or if you wake up at 4 am and can’t get back to sleep.
