It can be challenging to choose what activities you want to do when travelling in Iceland; there are just so many things to choose from! Hiking, soaking in the Blue Lagoon or a hot tub in one of the many local geothermal pools around the country, see an ice cave, walk on a glacier, drive on a glacier, river rafting, take a helicopter sightseeing tour, and all the other things. It is hard to know where to begin to look!
In our mind, the best place to start is to narrow it down to land, air or water?
If you like water, you are in luck! Apart from the many geothermal pools (manmade and natural) dotted around the country and even snorkeling tours, you can surf AND kayak in Iceland. Oh yes.
But being Iceland, where nature regularly tries to kill you, you need to be careful.
What do you need to know about surfing and kayaking in Iceland?
Well, the most important thing to know is that you will have to wear the right gear. It is not advisable and can be downright dangerous to go either surfing or kayaking without a wetsuit. The ocean and water around Iceland are relatively cold all year round so; you will have to be prepared if you fall in.
What about currents?
Well, for surfing, you will have to choose your beach wisely. Reynisfjara is not suitable for example, despite some fantastic waves but the beach is known for its sneaker waves, and people have been killed there by waves that were larger than people expected and dragged them into the ocean.
But Iceland is an island, where there are waves there are possibilities, so bring your surfboard or kayak with you and go on an adventure – just be careful.
Do you have to know how to kayak or surf?
