Top 5 Things to do in Iceland in the Spring

Spring (March through May) is a wonderful time to visit Iceland. The weather can be unpredictable, but you will have awesome access to Iceland’s top attractions, with fewer tourists than in the peak season.

Here are the top 5 things to do in Iceland in the Spring:

Spring brings water, water, and more water

Waterfalls, hot springs, swimming pools – you will encounter them all as you drive the Ring Road, and we recommend stopping at as many as possible. Water is a big part of our culture and sitting in a hot tub – no matter if it’s raining, snowing, or a bright sunny day – is as Icelandic as it gets!

Glaciers in the spring

The Icelandic glaciers are an experience not to be missed. On the south coast near Vatnajökull (the biggest glacier in Europe), you have Jökulsárlón (e. Glacier Lagoon), where the Ice Cave tour runs from November to March. Also, on the south coast, you can go glacier walking on Sólheimajökull, which is easily accessible from Reykjavík. And last-but-not-least, on the west coast, you can take a tour with Into the Glacier through the human-made ice tunnels leading to the blue heart of the Langjökull, Iceland’s second biggest glacier.

Whale watching is a great springtime activity in Iceland

An Iceland whale watching tour is a great adventure. There are over a dozen species of whales in the waters around Iceland, and sightings are very common. Whale watching can be done throughout the year, and you have various tour options.

The sweet and pretty puffins

The Atlantic Puffin starts to return to Iceland, their breeding home, in early April. This loveable bird can be found on the south coast, the west coast, and the Westman Islands. They are fun to watch and seeing them will put a smile on your face for sure.

Northern Lights – yes you can catch them in the early spring

March is a great month to catch the Aurora Borealis before the season ends in mid-April. By the second half of April, the Northern Lights become harder to see due to the shifting daylight. For the best viewing, escape the city lights and drive into the countryside for a romantic evening under the spell of the Northern Lights.
