VAÐLAHEIÐA TUNNEL

Vaðlaheiðargöng (Vadlaheidi tunnel) is a new tunnel in the northern part of Iceland. The tunnel is right next to Iceland’s second-largest town, Akureyri, and even though it only shortens the Ring Road by approximately 16km it eliminates the need for travellers to drive over the Víkurskarð mountain heath, which can be difficult and dangerous in winter.

Drivers need to pay road toll when they drive through the Vadlaheidi Tunnel and it is unique in the fact that there are no toll booths or pay machines around. Instead, travellers must visit www.tunnel.is and pay the 2.152 ISK fee for each single trip via card, either 24 hours prior to or after their trip through the tunnel.

We would like to point out to our summer travellers that driving over the Víkurskarð mountain heath will not delay your trip by more than a few minutes and is totally free of charge. It is only in winter that the tunnel is the far better option.

IMPORTANT:

Please note that if the toll is not paid via www.tunnel.is during the 6-hour time window, the road toll is raised and the bill is sent directly to Blue Car Rental as the registered owner of the vehicle.

In these cases Blue Car Rental needs to add a service fee / handling fee of 2.000 ISK to the toll fee resulting in a total charge of 4.152 ISK* for the customer. This is due to the work that is done by our staff in relation to any official inquiry the company must respond to and the ascertaining of the renter at the exact time of the presumed day of the event and other investigation needed.

*Note: If a customer drives through the tunnel more than once, the charge for each trip is added to the total amount.

We therefore encourage all our customers to please make sure to pay the toll fee via www.tunnel.is in time.

REYKJAVIK PARKING

Drivers must pay for parking in certain areas in Reykjavik City. Mainly in the center and downtown area.

This applies to both outdoor parking as well as parking garages such as Hafnartorg and Höfðatorg.

There are kiosks at some streets and garages where drivers can pay for parking, but we also recommend using the app “Parka” for the payment.

Reykjavik Parking Service does not issue printed tickets for parking violations. They are sent electronically to drivers in cases where cars have been parked illegally or without paying parking charges.

KEFLAVIK AIRPORT PARKING

Parking at Keflavik International Airport is charged electronically. Gates will open automatically when entering and leaving parking areas around the terminal.

The first 15 minutes are free but after that a fee is added and increases every hour spent on the parking lot.

In both parks there are signs and payment information which nobody should miss. The charge at each park is based on length of stay of a vehicle determined by license plate recognition. The charge is for one day, valid until midnight each day, and drivers are able to pay on the spot through parking booths or pay machines or via these websites;

Thingvellir National Park

Skaftafell National Park

In both of the above mentioned national parks the Entrance Fee / Parking Fee is:

In these cases Blue Car Rental needs to add a service fee / handling fee of 2.000 ISK to Entrance Fee / Parking Fee resulting in a total charge of 3.000 – 3.300 ISK for the customer. This is due to the work that is done by our staff in relation to any official inquiry the company must respond to and the ascertaining of the renter at the exact time of the presumed day of the event and other investigation needed.

We therefore encourage all our customers to please make sure to pay the Entrance Fee / Parking Fee at the spot or via the beforementioned websites!
